Certina DS-2 Automatic
The Certina DS-2 automatic was introduced in 1968 until 1976 as a successor to the successful DS line that was launched in 1959. What is the DS all about? Well its stands for ‘Double Security’ the crown has a double security system, and is partially hidden. The ‘DS’ is made up of three components never coming into direct contact, the case, movement and the dail. The calibre is very strong and robust as it is fixed by strengthened screws and is protected by a rubber ring almost like an inner tube from a tire, but obviously it is not inflated, it is a thick yellow elastic shock protection. Finished off with a plexiglass four times as thick as normal watches and a reinforced back-case. A groundbreaking innovation.
This model is easy to date as it has the later 28 Jewel 25-651M calibre which were introduced towards the final years of production in 1975-76.
The back-case is very attractive with the distinctive Certina ‘Turtle’ logo. These watches are very robust, attractive, stainless steel and gold plate and have stood the test of time.
They come in a plethora of dial colours and are still very affordable. The quality cost ratio equal tremendous value in my humble opinion.
Happy hunting!
